AT THE PLUSH HOTEL room across the country, another kind of celebration took place. Kira and Al didn’t say a word while the elevator whisked them quietly to their floor, nor when they entered the room with a breathtaking view over nighttime Los Angeles. They didn’t say a word when they stood close to each other and looked deeply into each other’s eyes. Recognition.

Here you are, at last. He didn’t say the words, but Kira heard them nevertheless.

You’re not alone anymore, she answered with her mind. I always will be with you. Until my last breath.

They seemed to communicate telepathically, each hearing the voice of the other as clearly as if they had spoken them.

For a long time, the only sounds in the room were those of their breathing and their beating hearts. It had taken centuries for them to be brought here, to this moment, Kira thought. She remembered and cherished every one of them. But for Al, there had been only a few encounters between them, however strange and impossible they might have seemed, in this time, and she still was saddened by his inability to remember. She hoped that it could change with time. Time. They just needed time. And he would remember. Everything. She hoped beyond all hope. She had to, because if he couldn’t—wouldn’t—remember, it was all for nothing. The sacrifices, the pain, the hurt, the wait. Their souls would be lost forever. And the soul of that tiny unborn life would be damning her forever into eternity...

But she didn’t want to think about that now. No sad thoughts. No fears. No doubts. He was here, with her. Finally! She put her hand on his heart and smiled when it jerked under her palm. He mirrored her gesture. Kira closed the distance between them and kissed his eyes, then his cheeks, his chin, and only then fastened her lips onto his mouth.

Al willingly let her take the lead, but only for a moment, for a stunned moment when her tongue touched his and her taste exploded into him, and he knew. Her taste was so achingly, impossibly familiar that it couldn’t be just from that one kiss they had shared in her condo just days ago. No, this was years—maybe millennia—of familiarity, and he was mesmerized by the onslaught of his feelings. Remembrance. Her smell, her texture, her taste. He was drowning in it, in her, and didn’t care anymore. Like a hungry person who finally was brought to a feast, he gorged himself, unable to tear his mouth, his hands away from her.

Kira sensed the change in his response; his mouth got greedier, his hands almost bruising. He wasn’t gentle anymore, but she didn’t want him to be. She was way beyond the turning point. With impatient hands, she started to tear his clothes off him. The ripping of the material—his? hers?—didn’t stop them. Panting, tugging, swearing, they managed to partially free their bodies, shedding the clothing off and along with it the civilized shell, and then they let the animals roam.
